Tungaloy Corporation recently announced the expansion of its SBN30 solid CBN series for high-speed cast iron machining with the addition of 14 new insert lineups, enabling a broader range of applications. The SBN30 is a high-hardness CBN insert suitable for high-speed and deep cutting of cast iron. The entire chip is made of a CBN sintered body, providing excellent wear and chipping resistance. With optimized CBN grain size and a dedicated binder, it enables stable, long tool life performance in both interrupted and continuous cutting operations.
In automotive parts, particularly in components such as brake discs, flywheels, and cast iron gear cases, there is an increasing demand for high-speed machining to improve production efficiency. However, when using commonly employed carbide or ceramic tools, increasing the cutting speed often leads to a significant reduction in tool life, making stable machining difficult. In addition, brazed CBN tools tend to experience edge chipping under severe cutting conditions, raising concerns about reliability. As a result, the market is seeking tool materials that combine higher heat resistance with greater reliability, and there is increasing anticipation for new solutions that can achieve both high-speed machining and long tool life.
Benefits and Features
Feature 1: Expanded lineup for a wide range of cast iron machining
– In addition to the existing 10 items, 14 new items—such as T-shaped, D-shaped, and different corner radii—have been added.
– Enables optimal selection for various machining geometries and conditions, providing greater flexibility in process design.
– Significantly expands the applicable range in high-speed machining of cast iron.
Feature 2: High-efficiency and stable machining with solid CBN inserts
– The entire insert is made of sintered CBN, allowing deep cutting and high-feed machining.
– Achieves higher cutting speeds compared to ceramic or carbide tools, improving productivity.
– Excellent wear resistance ensures long tool life and stable machining quality.
Feature 3: Cost-effective multi-corner design
– Unlike brazed types, the multi-corner design allows more usable edges, maximizing tool life.
– Reduces cost per corner and contributes to overall machining cost reduction.
– Combines high-efficiency machining with low-cost operation, maximizing benefits in mass production lines.
