Walter is expanding its Xtra·tec® XT M5130 milling cutter family with new cutter bodies designed for cost-effective machining of large surfaces at shallow depths of cut. The expansion targets applications such as machining large plain surfaces and stepped structures where only a small amount of material needs to be removed. These applications require large tool diameters with a high number of teeth to improve productivity.

Using existing indexable insert sizes for depths of cut below 16 mm, Walter is increasing the available cutter diameter range from the previous 80 mm to 100, 125 and 160 mm. Cartridge tools extend the available diameter range up to 315 mm. The smaller cutting inserts allow a higher number of teeth per tool diameter, enabling faster machining of large surface areas and shorter machining times.

Like all milling cutters in the Xtra·tec® XT range, the new variants also feature its tried-and-tested design characteristics: a 12 % increase in the cross-section of the indexable insert around the insert bore, a 34 % larger contact area for the insert, and a 40 % stronger tooth back for enhanced stability and process reliability. Thanks to the smaller – and therefore more cost-effective – Cutting inserts, the application saves not only machining time but also cutting tool material costs. Face/shoulder milling, Pocket milling, Ramping, and circular interpolation milling – and suitable for all materials in the ISO groups P, K, M, N and S.
