Double the Tool life, optimized bore quality: the Drion·tec®  D-Spade D5142

Walter AG has introduced the Drion·tec® D-Spade D5142, the world’s first exchangeable-tip drill featuring a double-sided indexable insert. What sets this innovation apart is that the flank face of the first cutting edge also acts as the support surface for the second cutting edge. This unique design effectively doubles the service life of the exchangeable tip and significantly lowers the cost per metre of drilling.

Engineered for maximum cost efficiency, the drill covers diameters ranging from 12 to 32 mm and lengths from 3 to 8 × D(c). It features four lands and a self-centring point geometry, which together deliver high precision and superior hole surface quality — ensuring accurate centring, straight hole paths, and tight diameter tolerances.

Ground and polished chip clearance spaces enhance chip evacuation and boost process reliability. The drill features six coolant outlets that deliver precise cooling to the cross-cutting edge, main cutting edge, and circumference on both teeth. The DS42 indexable insert combines a fine-grain substrate with a gold-coloured HiPIMS coating, offering excellent wear resistance and easy visual wear detection.

The symmetrical design of the double-sided exchangeable tips not only extends tool life but also reduces carbide usage per cutting edge by 45% compared to conventional drills. With these innovations, Walter positions the Drion·tec® D-Spade D5142 as the new benchmark in cost-effective and sustainable holemaking—especially ideal for high-volume manufacturers working with steel and cast iron, such as those in the automotive, energy, and rail vehicle industries.
