Gühring introduces circular segment end mill for efficient 3D machining

0

Gühring has introduced the G-Mold 55 CS, a four-flute solid carbide circular segment end mill designed for efficient finishing, semi-finishing and 3D machining of surfaces and contours on 5-axis machines. Developed for demanding mould-making applications, the tool aims to improve machining productivity while delivering better surface finishes.

The circular segment end mill offers significant advantages over conventional ball end mills, which are commonly used for machining complex geometries. Its larger contact area and considerably greater radius allow machining with line spacing of up to 10 times that of ball end mills, reducing the number of machining passes required.

The tool offers manufacturers the potential to achieve machining speeds up to 80% faster or surface finishes up to 10 times better, depending on application requirements. This makes the G-Mold 55 CS particularly suitable for finishing large, uniform surfaces and contours, where conventional ball end mills may result in longer machining times.

With this development, Gühring aims to help manufacturers improve machining efficiency, reduce cycle times and achieve higher surface quality in precision mould-making applications.

Smoother running, better surfaces, 1.5 times longer service life

The solid carbide end mill is used in hard and tough materials of ISO groups P, M, S, and H up to 55 HRC. Upon request, Gühring also offers a version of the solid carbide tool with the proven Carbo+ coating for machining aluminum. Its unequal flute spacing ensures exceptionally smooth running, while the HiPIMS coating provides optimal wear protection. Compared to competitors, the Gühring tool stands out with its smoother running, improved surface finishes, and 1.5 times longer tool life.

The main application of this milling cutter lies in the economical machining of complex freeform surfaces, contours, and large area sections. The large radius of the circular segment tool allows for a significantly increased required line feed, thereby considerably reducing machining times.

Gühring supplies the entire process

In practice, the demanding nature of CAM programming often presents a hurdle, leading users to continue relying on inefficient ball end mills despite significant potential savings. Modern circular segment end mills, however, offer considerable advantages for machining, finishing, and cost-effective semi-finishing of complex components.

As a manufacturer, Gühring consolidates all its expertise in the use of circular segment milling cutters under one roof and provides its customers with personal support from process design to the finished workpiece. Upon request, Gühring assists with CAM programming and the selection of the correct process parameters for machining, as well as the use of suitable tools. This allows users to benefit from an optimally coordinated process chain, shorter machining times, and optimal results tailored to individual customer requirements.

Your advantages with the circular segment cutter:

  • Maximum process reliability thanks to innovative cutting geometry
  • Reduced processing times with consistent quality
  • Long operating times for maximum efficiency
