Seco has introduced MS3501, a new high-productivity milling grade developed for demanding machining applications involving heat-resistant and adhesive materials across ISO P, M and S categories.
Based on the latest micro-alloyed, coarse-grained cemented carbide platform, MS3501 combines a heat-resistant substrate with a tough Ti(C,N)–Al₂O₃ CVD coating. This combination is designed to deliver stable cutting performance and improved wear resistance at higher cutting speeds.
The new grade is intended for machining materials with low thermal conductivity, including superalloys, precipitation-hardened steels, high-alloy steels and stainless steels. Its development addresses the challenges of maintaining cutting stability and tool life when machining difficult-to-cut materials at higher speeds.
Predictable and stable performance in variable conditions
Advanced pre‑ and post‑treatment processes reduce friction and help suppress built‑up edge, chip‑welding, and chatter in adhesive materials, enabling more predictable tool life and controlled cutting conditions.
“MS3501 targets applications where heat and adhesion typically limit productivity,” says Markus Kilpinen, Global Product Manager for Milling at Seco. “It delivers stable performance even in less rigid setups or variable machining conditions.”
Suitable for aggressive operations due to high heat resistance
The grade features a strengthened binder phase for improved resistance to chipping, cracking, and thermal shock, making it suitable for medium to rough milling operations. Integrated used edge detection technology supports full edge utilization and reduced tooling waste.
MS3501 complements the PVD‑coated MP2051 grade, offering higher heat resistance and cutting speed capability for aggressive milling operations.
