MAPAL has announced a breakthrough in the machining of long-chipping steel materials, including stainless and alloyed steels, with the development of a new standardised chip breaker geometry for fine boring blades. This innovation delivers both technical precision and economic advantages, setting new benchmarks for machining performance.

Unveiled at EMO Hannover 2025, the new chip breaker design features a precisely defined lead and rake angle geometry, combined with optimally adjusted cutting data and depths. This configuration ensures controlled chip formation, even when machining tough, long-chipping materials—resulting in smooth chip removal, reduced heat generation, and enhanced process stability.

The advancement not only improves surface quality and dimensional accuracy, but also extends tool life and minimizes machine downtime, offering manufacturers a more reliable and cost-effective solution for fine boring operations.

With this innovation, MAPAL continues to drive progress in precision machining, reinforcing its leadership in developing high-performance solutions for challenging materials.

Chip breakers are not a new invention – but the idea of implementing standardisation for long-chipping steel materials in fine boring is. The chip breaker geometry developed by MAPAL combines decades of experience in this area with a clear focus on cost-effectiveness and user orientation. Until now, MAPAL has used chip breaker technologies for custom solutions. With the innovation presented at EMO 2025, the company is taking a big step towards standardisation and efficiency.

The fine boring blades with chip breaker geometry for unalloyed, alloyed and stainless steels are now available from stock with defined geometries and coatings.
