Tungaloy Expands DSW Drill Series for Small-Diameter Deep Hole Machining

Tungaloy Corporation has announced the expansion of its high-efficiency solid carbide drill series “DSW,” introducing 22 new items covering diameters from 3 mm to 10 mm with L/D ratios ranging from 16 to 30. The expansion aims to enhance tool selection and performance in small-diameter deep hole machining applications.

In precision component manufacturing, including automotive parts and semiconductor equipment, the demand for small-diameter deep hole drilling with L/D ratios exceeding 10—such as for cooling and sensor holes—has been steadily increasing. However, challenges such as hole deviation and chip clogging are common in the 3–10 mm diameter range, making it difficult to maintain machining accuracy and productivity.

These challenges are further amplified when deep hole machining is carried out on general-purpose machines such as machining centers and lathes. In response, there is a growing demand for solid carbide drills that can deliver both high efficiency and precision with stability, along with expanded product lineups that cover a wider range of sizes.

The DSW is a high-performance solid carbide drill with an advanced coating. It delivers excellent wear resistance and long tool life, enabling high-precision drilling in a wide range of metallic materials such as steel and cast iron. Its innovative cutting edge design ensures stable machining and exceptional dimensional accuracy. With a variety of types available, including external and internal coolant options, SolidDrill offers the optimal solution for diverse machining conditions.

Benefits and Features

Feature 1: High-precision and stable deep hole drilling performance
– The optimized point angle and double-margin design provide excellent centering and guiding performance.
– Ensures outstanding hole roundness and straightness, enabling high-precision machining even for deep holes.
– Minimizes runout and chatter during machining to maintain consistent quality and stability.

Feature 2: Improved productivity through high-efficiency machining
– Achieves significantly higher cutting and feed speeds compared to long HSS drills and gun drills.
– Eliminates the need for pecking cycles or step drilling, reducing overall cycle time.
– Enhances equipment utilization and optimizes production costs through high-efficiency operation.

Feature 3: Excellent wear resistance and wide applicability
– Utilizes the versatile carbide grade “AH725,” combining long tool life with stable cutting performance.
– Provides reliable chip evacuation and tool life even under MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) conditions.
– Suitable for a wide range of materials such as steel, stainless steel, and cast iron, meeting diverse machining needs.
